Name: Courtney Webster and Brandon Aguiar
Location: Providence, Rhode Island
Size: 950 square feet
Years Lived In: 1.5 years, rent
Courtney Webster (who's behind the lifestyle blog jeune amour) and her artist husband Brandon Aguiar fell in love with this Providence apartment's 15-foot high white walls, giant loft windows, exposed brick and the open living space. Courtney manages an interior design studio in Boston (while also offering event and editorial styling), so finding a home with good bones that she could maximize with her skills was a priority. But, it also needed to function as a working art studio for Brandon. "It was the perfect space for us to live and work," says Courtney.
Courtney writes: "Since we're working with a rental, we couldn't change any walls or structural elements. But our building allows paint, so we took advantage of that by painting the kitchen pink! It adds a bit of 'Palm Springs' whimsy to our home. By painting and simply switching out the hardware we made a very affordable and reversible update to the kitchen."
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: I think my husband Brandon and I have blended a mix of bohemian, mid-century modern, and rustic styles in our apartment to create a true reflection of us. We wanted it to feel honest and homey with a mix of functional and stylish pieces.
Inspiration: I draw inspiration from all around. I work in interior design, so I'm surrounded by beautiful fabrics, furniture and spaces all day long. Outside of work I pull lots of inspiration from Instagram and local shops.
Favorite Element: This is a tie between our peacock chair in the bedroom and our rattan shelf in the living room. Both pieces seemed to really finish up those rooms and gave them the vintage element they were lacking.
Biggest Challenge: Our biggest challenge is definitely how to hang things on the walls without coming across as a gallery. With big white walls in an open space, it's been hard to hang things at a good height while avoiding that. We'd love to get more art on the walls but it keeps feeling really cluttered.
What Friends Say: Our friends love how open the living space is. It's easy to host parties and gather all together! One of our friends noted how everything in our apartment feels thoughtful and sincere. I really appreciated that!
Biggest Embarrassment: Though not pictured, our biggest embarrassment is definitely our closet. We're lucky enough to have a walk-in closet but it definitely lacks proper storage and stuff ends up everywhere. Whoops.
Proudest DIY: Our bed and dining table are both DIYs with help from my dad. We are so in love with both!
Biggest Indulgence: Our biggest indulgence was our sofa, but we caught it on such a good sale that I can't even complain. We spent more than I would've liked on the throw blanket in our bedroom, our coffee table, and our pillow collection...but I have no regrets!
Best Advice: If you're limited in space or budget, only bring in items you love. Whether it's a kitschy porcelain cat, a vintage end table, a funny pillow — make sure you love it and it will never seem out of place in your home.
Dream Sources: If money and space were no issue I would take all the eclectic-ness of Anthropologie mixed with all the rattan from Serena and Lily with a sprinkle of big old vintage pieces.
