A Well-Loved 1950s Home in Nashville, TN
Shruthi and Peter Lapp knew this house was theirs from the moment they entered, and they’ve since refreshed and polished it bit by bit. After two years of living there, their home — a soon-to-be Airbnb listing — is allowing them to travel extensively, thanks to their future short-term renters. In their own words, Shruthi , a digital marketer, and Peter, an information security engineer, just want to be together. And whether “together” is in Nashville, TN or abroad, their home is allowing them to do just that.
The 1955 ranch was maintained incredibly well by the previous owners and the couple knew it was a perfect fit when they found the house. “We instantly felt a peace and calm come over us when we stepped into this home,” Shruthi says. “Both of us are natural-light-lovers, but in addition to that, we could actually feel how loved this house was! That’s really all we were looking for. A place to make our own and just be together.” The pair learned to paint walls, added their style to the space, and made the house feel quite homey.
Shruthi and Peter’s aesthetic is modern-meets-minimal, mixed with vintage touches. Their use of art and decorative pieces is executed both sparingly and beautifully. “We really wanted this home to reflect both us as individuals and who we are together. Our goal for this home was for it to be inviting, simple, airy with pops of color and global inspiration. We wanted each room to tell a little part of our story,” Shruthi says. “We’re both travel obsessed. New places and things inspire us more than anything else. We are currently getting ready to take the trip of a lifetime together for an entire year!” It’s remarkable how a home can allow Shruthi and Peter to grow closer together, whether physically there, or away. –Lauren

1/25 Natural tones, materials and light are the elements that make up the living room design. The entire room feels lifted and lively thanks to the calm, pretty color palette and the abundant natural light. 2/25 Peter and Shruthi in their airy, Nashville, TN home. 3/25 The living room feels large and open. The sectional's corner direction creates an entryway to an otherwise open space, making room for a more structured living area. 4/25 "Smell is one of the most important parts of a home, in our perspective. We can each still remember the way our childhood homes smell. I love having an abundance of candles in each room with rich, woodsy scents," Shruthi says. 5/25 "This is the coziest chair in existence. If you push back against the chair, it reclines completely. It’s the ultimate comfy chair," Shruthi says. "Peter loves reading and working in this chair while his favorite albums play." 6/25 "We are vinyl lovers. This solid wood, vintage record player was a Craigslist find by Peter and we absolutely love it! The great thing about this record player is that it has wheels on the bottom to help make moving it a lot easier," Shruthi shares. 7/25 "We went crazy for these floor lamps and the rug was handmade in Turkey." 8/25 "My favorite thing about this view is that the hallway and bedrooms on [the] opposing side of the house turn bright yellow right before sunset because they get filled with light! It’s completely magical to just sit and take in," Shruthi says. 9/25 The drop-zone is minimal, efficient and stunning to look at. Its integration with the living room is done seamlessly. A practical space has surely never been this pleasing to look at from the couch. 10/25 Shruthi and Peter's dining room is a stunner. The weight of the bottom third of the walls, the dark dining set and bar are well balanced by the hide rug, white tops of the walls and beaming windows. 11/25 "This credenza is one of our most favorite Craigslist finds! It’s a stunning Stanley piece from the 1960s. It was exactly what we were looking for to help pull this room together," Shruthi says. 12/25 Shruthi and Peter's minimalist approach to mid-century design looks gorgeous in their dining room. 13/25 The contrasting walls are softened with wood tones and houseplants. 14/25 "My favorite thing about this kitchen is the hardwood floor. Hardwood in a kitchen feels so cozy to me. I love the way my stand mixer pops against the subway tile backsplash. The white cabinets and earthy countertops give this room a warmth and cheerfulness that I love…which is perfect since we love cooking meals together and with friends," Shruthi says. 15/25 The original cabinets were given a facelift with new paint. 16/25 Shruthi and Peter installed these shelves in the kitchen to give the space more personality and storage. They chose a rich wood stain to bring warmth into the room. "Those gold elephant bookends are a nod to my Indian roots. I love the way they look with the grain of the shelving. Cookbooks are our favorite," Shruthi says. 17/25 Shruthi and Peter have found a way to make their master bedroom very personal while keeping it chic. "My favorite thing about this room is our bed. It has the most divine memory foam mattress and I love diving into the flannel sheets and crisp white duvet. It really does feel like you’re on a cloud. We’re both a little nerdy…okay fine: We’re both really nerdy, hence the art on the wall. We’re huge X-Files lovers. It gives this room an eccentric touch that we both love," Shruthi says. 18/25 "I love that our nightstands have room for lots and lots of books," Shruthi says. "We love reading together before bed. I love that Peter’s side of the bed is so reflective of who he is. He’s always been a bookworm. A photo of his grandfather from WW2 is on his nightstand." 19/25 Light colored furniture against light colored walls seems to be the Lapp home's aesthetic - and it works so well. 20/25 "This dresser/beauty nook just makes me happy when I wake up in the morning," Shruthi says. 21/25 The second bedroom is cool and inviting. "I love the amount of sunlight that pours into this room both in the morning and during golden hour." 22/25 The brass lamp was a Craigslist find that goes perfectly with the beautiful rug. 23/25 The third bedroom is simple and sweet. The tonal color palette makes the space soothing and comfortable. 25/25 "Our favorite thing about our home is sharing it with each other!" Original article and pictures take www.designsponge.com site
