West Coast Casual Meets Southwest Minimalism in Brooklyn

West Coast Casual Meets Southwest Minimalism in Brooklyn

Name: Eva Goicochea and Ian Goicochea

Location: Greenpoint — Brooklyn, NY

Size: 1300 square feet

Years lived in: 3 months, renting

What happens when two creatives — one from California/New Mexico and the other from Arizona/Oregon — come to New York together with four animals? They make some serious West Coast meets Southwest minimalist magic.

Ian and Eva met nine years ago through a mutual friend. They went on their first date a week later, moved in a month after that, and were married a year later. And though they first lived together and began their businesses in Los Angeles, they've been sharing this bright Brooklyn home for three months.

Their home is a place of gathering for friends and family — and animals! They've rescued two Persian cats named Winnie and Bea and two shihtzus, Addy and Colette. But their home is also where these two run their own businesses. Ian is a mechanical engineer and the co-founder of Tinker Watches, well-made, modular time pieces. Eva is the co-founder of both Tinker Watches and getmaude.com, a "maudern" sex products company.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: We were raised in New Mexico/California (Eva) and Arizona/Oregon (Ian) and our style is some version of West Coast casual meets Southwest minimalism. That said, with four animals, you can't be too precious and all of our stuff is from sources that are easy on the wallet.

Inspiration: We know that Georgia O'Keeffe is having a moment, but her style is something that we both grew up with and it feels like this space (plus that New York-New Mexico connection she had) lends itself to a relaxed and monochromatic palette.

Favorite Element: The large windows. We're not known for being green thumbs, but the plants are happy here.

Biggest Challenge: Having a lot of white in a house full of animals.

What Friends Say: We've managed to make Brooklyn look like the West.

Biggest Embarrassment: The number of dog beds floating around. They're only 12 pounds each...how many beds do they need?

Proudest DIY: These desks (IKEA counters and legs) we custom cut for the space. They get a lot of compliments even though they're so easy to make.

Biggest Indulgence: The office couch, as its main purpose is for taking a break from sitting at our desks. Have we both nodded off after lunch a time or two? Yep.

Best Advice: If you have a neutral furniture palette, it's easy to layer and change objects and textiles to mix it up. We love color, but simplicity feels timeless and focused.
